Keep on running

I have taken up running to make sure I am in peak condition for the op. My rationale is that the healthier I go into it the quicker my recovery will be. I always thought runners were right smug bastards with some kind of weird fetish about lycra. Not true as it turns out. As soon as I have mentioned that I am running a number of friends and colleagues have opened up about their pavement pounding habits. I never thought I would be a runner - I thought it would be the dullest thing on the planet, up and down the streets with everyone secretly hoping you'll trip and fall over. My experience has been completely different. Things I have learnt so far:
1) Trainers are really important. Get a good pair they protect you from the evils of the paving slab.
2) The first two minutes are the hardest - once you have got going it's all heart rates and miles and Cher (this will depend on your chosen playlist) but those first two minutes are hard.
3) Run to music. It really helps. Plus it is a great opportunity to listen to things you might otherwise not get the chance to.
4) It is so easy to fit it in. I have been getting up a bit earlier and heading out first thing. I personally think this is a great time to run as it wakes me up for the day and Tara is delighted because when I get back I am now in charge of morning coffee.
5) You will feel smug. Enjoy it.
6) You are surrounded by secret runners - seek them out - join them - they will welcome you with open arms.
By my best guess estimations we are about a month away from operation kidney. We are seeing the surgeon on the 30th March and then we think that the op will go in for 2/3 weeks after that. So, I have been running for a couple of weeks and have about 4 more before I will have to ease off after the op. I'm not expecting to change my fitness overnight but it does make one feel more positive knowing that you are going into something the most prepared you can be.
I've asked Tara to run with me. She is disgusted that I would even suggest it. She has assured me the only thing she will be running is a bath. She's been muttering about dodgy knees - we'll see.
